Being A Woman

Is “are you letting her out dressed like that?”,
the double edged sword of
“prude” and “asking for it”;

Is practicing the taste of the word “no”
until it rolls off her tongue like second nature,
yet, unwanted attention she still must endure;

Is her mother’s worried voice
“don’t stay out too late,
a split second is all it takes”;

Is 11pm with her keys between her fingers,
a make shift weapon she’s mastered completely,
“please, for the love of God, let me get home safely”;

Is finding comfort in street lamps and security cameras
and taking the long way home –
the price of having the XX chromosome;

Is walking alone in a man’s world
and not having any sense of security
but hearing all this talk about equality.
